When in Remington, Alberta, I visited their magnificent Carriage Museum. This particular carriage struck my fancy because of the painted Dutch winter scene painted on the back of the seat. I had always wanted to do something with it but just couldn't figure out how to use it in a work. Then, while perusing Dutch landscape painters of the 16th century in Wikimedia Commons I came across this work by the dutch artist Andreas Schelfhout. The final result is an reworked and extensively modified picture incorporating a country road that fit with the horse drawn carriage. I hope that you enjoy this work.
Dutch waterways regularly froze in the cold of winter. In the landscapes, reflecting their harsh winters life was hard during the Little Ice Age of the 17th and 18th century. Winter was characterized by extremely severe cold that arrived early and lasted well into spring. I am not certain that this carriage would have been found in such a harsh setting or used on the iced roads...
