Description
The elements of the piece simply came together in my effort to produce an image that indicates the importance of water in our world for an upcoming show. This year I read the book 'Radium Girls' and discovered that in the early 1900's radium was used to coat watch dials to make them glow in the dark. Young women used to put paintbrushes between their lips to make the pointed tip, then dipped into radium prior to painting. As it turns out, most died of radiation poisoning in a most horrible way. Radium was also put in medicines for 'health' which ultimately caused organ destruction and death. So the skull and dead tree are more than just symbolic.
