Description
This image goes to the question of how we perceive ourselves? Better yet....how do YOU perceive yourself. Wikipedia defines narcissism as: "Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder, characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance, an excessive need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. People with the disorder are often perceived as arrogant, callous, envious and tend to be exploitative in their interpersonal relationships. They can be excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity. Those with NPD generally lack emotional awareness and insight into their own condition, and fail to acknowledge that their behavior is at the root of their own problems as well as the problems they cause for others because, as a personality disorder, their thoughts, perceptions, and actions are generally consistent with their sense of self". We are what we think and do. So I ask you, the viewer and artist, where do you stand in your quest for artistic expression and insight? Would love to hear your comments.
And....does this sound familiar. Is there someone known to most everyone like this?

Beautiful illustraton Jeff. You raise some interesting questions regarding what drives an artist - it is self-serving, a way to excercise demons, or a desire to bring light to the beauty in our world when so much can seem dark? I think it is something different to each artist and sometimes it can be a mixture of all those and more. In our 'new world' of the constant barrage of social media, for some people it is a means of getting attention 'look at me!!' in a selfie-absorbed way. For me, art may relfect current social mores, preoccupations and view points that often become trivial with time, but true art will illict a response from the viewer that comes from the 'na'u' (as the Hawaiians say), the core of who we are.
