Description
This is a fusion work with the background image taken of a statue of a Northwest native on a horse located in North Eastern Washington State near Lake Ossoyo. The bison skull image was taken in South Dakota. The image of the Native American was taken at the Solstice Parade in Seattle. There are numerous filters of other images superimposed on the work with addition and substraction techniques used to complete the project.
"South Dakota" comes from a Siouan Indian word? Dakota is the tribal name of the Dakota Sioux, meaning "friendly" or "allied." The Dakota Indians were not the only native people of this region, however. as there are Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux, Oglala, and some other tribes from this region. These were the plains natives.
There has been and continues to be mistreatment of the Plains Natives.
The Cheyenne River Indian Reservation was created by the United States in 1889 by breaking up the Great Sioux Reservation, following its victory over the Lakota in a series of wars in the 1870s. The reservation covers almost all of Dewey and Ziebach counties in South Dakota. In addition, many small parcels of off-reservation trust land are located in Stanley, Haakon, and Meade counties.
The total land area is 4,266.987 sq mi (11,051.447 km), making it the fourth-largest Indian reservation in land area in the United States. Its largest community is unincorporated North Eagle Butte, while adjacent Eagle Butte is its largest incorporated city. The Land Acts of 1909 and 1910, opened up the Cheyenne River Reservation to non-Native settlement. There is much more that can be said of the Native Peoples and their history in South Dakota....but if interested you can search the internet and read the many books published about these peoples. I present an artwork that reflects my feelings.
