Description
I give you the title, chain link fence, a cross, and a homeless man image with hand outstretched. I leave it to you to interpret this piece. And I am asking anyone who looks at this work to attempt an interpretation in your commentary. I am very interested in how this image is interpreted. My own interpretation won't be revealed until I have sufficient responses. I do think there can be multiple interpretations. And also, how does this piece hold up as a work of art. Let me know. Any other constructive criticism is welcomed as long as it is not entirely insulting. The original image is of a disposal box for garbage. I thought it made a perfect metaphor with the handle reformed into a cross to extend a religious undertone to the work. The image of the man was NOT on the dumpster....it was added and there were other manipulations. So many people in this country and the world go hungry every day and need help from others. The church fulfills some of this need, as does the federal government. But so many folks are still destitute and in need of help. This image highlights their plight. IF you like this work and purchase it, I pledge to give any money I receive to the many agencies in this area working with the homeless.

Jeff, I did not read your description first, but tried to interpret this interesting photograph in my way. I felt that this man is asking for forgiveness. He must have done something which caused damage to someone, knowingly or unknowingly.... How unhappy is he who cannot forgive himself----

You could be showing conflicting obligations between protection of private property/family and charity. Does he have an obligation to society to be independent instead of a burden? Does society have the obligation to unlock any impediments to his progress? Is he reaching for a handout because his business was locked down? So many interpretations are possible with a creative vision...

I am happy to see this thoughtful response to this work. Another is: does the church and Christianity have an obligation to help those in need. Really appreciate the look and comment Barbie.

I see this man reaching out for help from some religious association but has been locked out from their empathy!
