Abstract - fusion photography. Do enlarge to see the detail not visible in the thumbnail. This work is meant to depict the diaspora of native American tribes throughout the USA. The butterflies on the forms represent the many Indian nations. They, and the two butterflies above are symbolic of renewal and transformation.
Indigenous peoples in the United states, including Alaska and Hawaii, originate from multiple nations or tribes. They survive today even in the face of genocide perpetuated by Europeans and other immigrants coming from the rest of the world. The term used to describe these original Americans is Native Indians or Indians, but these words do not include native Hawaiians or peoples from Alaska such as the Aleut, Yupik or Inuit communities. They have a distinctive identity and culture and represent distinct political entities. Even though it is the 21st century there continues to be conflict between Native Americans and those who arrived as part of what has been defined as the New World. Unfortunately much of what is known historically with respect to native peoples comes from historical records created by the white man. Native American history, with few exceptions, is not taught in US schools. In Hawaii a high school has been specifically dedicated to teaching Hawaiian history to its students of Hawaiian heritage. There are also some Native American schools on the mainland that also teach cultural history but, as noted, most mainstream schools do not do so. This results in a distortion of the historical record which is most unfortunate. Citizens of this country have much to learn about cultures other than those that have immigrated from Europe.
