Description
Dreaming is an important part of sleep. Everyone dreams. Why we dream is not particularly important....but what we dream may be. Through the night comes these eminations that include sensations, images, ideas, and every emotion that can be experienced during the day.
The technical side of it is explained in Wikipedia. As they state: "dreams mainly occur in the rapid-eye movement or REM stage of sleep when brain activity is high and resembles that of being awake. Rem sleep is revealed by continuous movements of the eyes during sleep. At times, dreams may occur during other stages of sleep. However, these dreams tend to be much less vivid or memorable."
You dream. I dream. Sometimes for seconds and sometimes for minutes. Is this your connection to the unconscious? Is it the working out of problems that one incurs during the day? Whatever, when we dream we are not self-aware. But we are experiencing a sureal world that combines at the same time magical, tragic, enlightening, melancholic, and sometimes sexual images. Fueud, of course, explained dreams as the manifestation of our anxieties and desires relating to our childhood memories or 'obsessions'.
Many religions of the world have incorporated interpretation into their lexicon. Dreaming was either a blessing or a curse, depending on which period of time one lived or the type of religion one believed. The Greeks believed that Morpheus (the God of dreams) used dreams to prophisize the future. But you had to be sleeping at a shrine or temple to gain advantage from dreams. They also thought that during dreams the soul left the body.
The Hebrew tradition involves 'incubation' of dreams to gain devine revelation. And in Islam it is thought that dreams are the only way to gain 'revelations from God' since the death of their Prophet Mohammed.
Dreams have played a large role in art, both classical and modern, including 2-D and more recent film work.
In a series of work that I will be showing in November I have created images that reflect the depth behind dreams....the mystery associated with dreaming and the dream state. This is one of those images.
