Description
I was recently on a trip back east to Philadelphia and visited the Eastern State Prison. This is an amazing penitentiary historic site located in the city. At the same time I had just finished the book by Vincent bugliosi titled 'Divinity of Doubt, God and Atheism on Trial". I was moved to produce this piece based on my impressions of the book and the images I saw at the penitentiary.
The Eastern State was, according to the guide book, the world's first true penitentiary designed to inspire penitence....or true regret....in the hearts of criminals. There are seven cellblocks spread like the spokes of a wheel with running water and central heat incorporated into the structure. It was run by the Quakers. Its cells have sky-lit windows and an area for each inmate to go outdoors. Originally the inmates could not talk to anyone or each other and many, instead of being rehabilitated, simply went insane. The prison today is a true ruin and said to be haunted. It is crumbling down but has incredible beauty.
Among the notable inmates were 'Slic Willie" Sutton and 'Scarface' Al Capone. There was even a dog imprisoned because it killed a cat. Capones cell had several amenities including a record player, couch, chair, and other furniture.
The book 'Divinity of Doubt' is a fascinating read and Bugliosi makes fairly good arguments that represent a 'survey' of the theist-versus-atheist-versus-agnostic debate. It is definitely thought-provoking no matter what your beliefs. In my opinion the science section leaves something to be desired. Bugliosi is clearly no scientist. But his conversation around God's good and evil nature will leave you thinking......as it did with me.
I hope you enjoy this work.....
